Re-registering DevExpress Controls with Visual Studio

Every once in a while some confluence of events causes my Developer Express controls to disappear from the Visual Studio toolbox. I am not going to be an apologist for this, but support are having problems reproducing this problem. (If any of you have any hints they’d be appreciated by all.) I think it is annoying and would like to see the problem permanently resolved, but if it happens to you here is what you can do to quickly and painlessly re-register the controls with Visual Studio.

To re-register DevExpress controls with Visual Studio click Start|All Programs|Developer Express v2009 vol1|Components|Tools|ToolboxCreator.exe (clicking on the ToolboxCreator.exe executable). All other variations of running this command results in the dreaded error dialog (see Figure 1). Make sure you close Visual Studio before running the ToolboxCreator.exe utility.

Yeah, this has happened to me at least 3 times and this is the route I usually take to get them reinstalled.

Not sure why it's happening but it might be Windows Update, dunno though for sure. I'll take more of an interest the next time it happens and let you guys know.

Geoff.

I had that few times. What generally causes controls to disappear? VS2008 bugs?

Thank you. Windows update could be a good candidate, especially if it is a VS update of any kind. Support is aware of this issue, but it may be ahard one to reproduce. I am keeping an eye on this issue because it affects me too.

I don't agree with this issue becomes consequence of a VS2008 update.... NEVER.. the "Help |Check for Updates" command has worked for me. Seems like other add-in or component has changed the vs2008 add-ins registry.

It happens also when installing or updating other 3rd party components...

It can also happen if you use roaming profiles, it is a VS peculiarity that it loses track of all sorts of things such as toolbox items, recent history, etc.  Not much DX can do in that case.  I've also seen this when using VS in Citrix, and I suspect that might have a similar cause.

Hello,

I can reproduce this issue quite easily in our environment.

All i have to do is open a project that was developed on another machine and hey presto, toolbox icons for most third party tools dissapear and need re-registering on the toolbox.

Cheers.

I have to re-register every time I log off because of my roaming profile as said by Richard Morris, it's a real pain but I know it is unavoidable so I have got it to run on my computers startup.

An argument for the toolbox creator would be handy to tell it if you want to register the toolbox on vs 2008 or 2005 as it would cut down the time to launch a bit. Currently mine seems to register on both.

But this utility does not seem to work for Express versions of VS. Is there any other way to automate the creation of toolbox items?

I use several Setting Files in VS - one for Single Monitor - one for Multi Monitor use - i think VS loses here the TB items when switching between settings...

I was having this issue, until I changed my Visual Studio "Settings" file from a network drive to a local drive.

It is our company policy to change our "My Documents" folder from a local folder to a network drive, so that they can be easily backed up by our network administrators.  By default, this is where Visual Studio saves the "Settings" file(s), and apparently if for whatever reason, it can't get to this file, it trashes everything and resets it.

You can change the location where Visual Studio saves your settings/preferences in by going to Tools->Options->Environment->Import Export Settings

Once I changed this, I have yet to have the issue happen again in 4 or 5 months.

Thanks Eric ... it looks like that might have fixed my problem with roaming profiles.

This just happened to me, the Tool box fix works.

I suspect that it has something to do with windows updates or source safe

Hi I just had the same issue and managed to recreate it again as Scott said by opening a project developed on a machine without devxpress
