Professional DevExpress ASP.NET Controls has been Published

Well the DevExpress ASP.NET book is done. I know this because Joe Kunk got his copies and was nice enough to give me one of his copies. The book looks good; of course you guys will be the final judge of that. Maybe I will se my author copies today or tomorrow.

Amazon.com has updated the release date to 11/11/2009. You can pick up a copy at http://www.amazon.com/Professional-DevExpress-ASP-NET-Controls-Kimmel/dp/0470500832/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257528839&sr=8-1.

See you at PDC.

I just got mine last night also.  I was reading it while watching "V" on TV.  Looks good - great job publishing it so fast!

I just can't get enough DevExpress stuff - I'm hooked big time!  Yes you can send me some swag...I think that's the only stuff I'm missing.  :)

Great job again!

Thanks Zachary. Are you going to PDC? Also, if you post a review on Amazon.com maybe you can help others feel the DevExpress love. I passed the great job. I know the team will appreciate it.

If you aren't going to techEd, send me your snail mail address to paulk@devexpress.com and I will mail you a hat 9since you already have a book).

for kindle versions go to Amazon.com and click on the "request on Kindle link" www.amazon.com/.../ref=sr_1_1. That's up to Amazon, but I love my Kindle, especially when travelling.

Initially I felt I shouldn't have to buy this book, this content should be available in the documentation and other resources available to me as a customer.  In fact, I'm surprised that an eBook version of this won't eventually be part of our subscriptions.  But as I'm getting ready to venture across the line to the asp.net side after my winforms app is done, creating the same app in the web, I figured I'll give this book a try to get armed with all the knowledge possible to minimize the programming duplication (redoing the tasks to get it right).  So I ordered my copy today, we'll see how it goes.

DevExpress negotiated long and hard to keep the book price as low as possible, but just so you know DevExpress is not making a penny off the sale of the book. (Note the $26 price on Amazon.com. This is roughly half of what technical books typically cost.)

Neal: The content in the book is already available in the documentation and resources available to you as a customer. Neither Paul, Joe, or I invented some fabby dabby new ways of working with our ASP.NET controls, nor did we discover the super secret properties that were never documented, we just provided narrative and encapsulation and a different perspective on what is already provided as part of your subscription.

Just taking something I did for my part of the book as an example: I provide another way of structuring your Javascript code. Works in exactly the same way as client-side code that people have been writing with our controls since time began, but it's just another take on it.

In essence, you won't learn anything new, but you will see other viewpoints.

Cheers, Julian

I like to agree with Julian when I can, but in this case--"you won't leanr anything new"--I'd phrase as I hope you learn something new.

I think the supporting code that  includes LINQ, how to skin sites, client side behavior are things that may be useful (and perhaps new to some of you).

I do agree that a book package is a way of conveying similar kinds of information that we have on our website in a different format, with a different perspective, and together (Devexpress TV, the demos, and the book) you will have more of what you need to do a good job.

I also agree that the internal technical documentation people have done a thorough and excellent job in with the help documentation and the web site content.

Adam: Thanks for the buying the book. As some of your peers know by now DevExpress negotiated hard the lowest price possible and is not making any direct profit from the sale of the book. This represents DevExpress' commitment to bring our customers the best content and support possible. I hope you like the book.

All: Indeed you will learn lots of new stuff if you peruse the book. New code, new ways of looking at various problems, new descriptions. For all three of us, writing our sections, our chapters, meant that we learnt something new, which we're passing onto you.

Cheers, Julian

In the future, why not publish articles and post on your web site and deliver to your customers/prospective customers?  Why does it take a book to do this?  Each chapter you wrote could have been an ongoing eBook (article) posted on a section of your web site for all to consume FREE.

Continue writing on your other control sets but don't rely on a book to deliver your content, or the purpose of your writing.  Obviously your book will become obsolete in short order, documents you maintain control of can be updated at your discretion.

Paul,

This isn't about the money, it's about getting content to help DevExpress customers better use your products.  If it takes producing articles such as chapters for a book, so be it, but make it available directly on your web site and not require a conduit such as a book.

If you are writing a book then obviously your documentation, support center, and knowledgebase as deficient learning tools.  If they were effective and complete and also well organized, a book would be unnecessary and that time could obviously be invested elsewhere.

My $.02.

Thank YOU for writing,

Neal

Anything can be publishhed as an e-book, but publishing companies specialize in taking manuscripts and making books. Perhaps publishing seems easy or trivial, but there is always more to it. The collaboration means we produce the content--our expertise--and they produuce a finished product--their expertise. Almost all finished goods are produced this way because it is more efficient. To help our customers DevExpress does not receive any revenue from the book sales and the price is consequently as low as possible.

And, of course we have tons of content on our website and some parallel content/topics from the book will show up too.

Thanks for writing,

Paul

My copy of the book had to travel from USA to The Netherlands and finally arrived yesterday. Better World Books does not use any protection so it looked a bit used already.

Anyway, I love it! As I'm wresting with XPO and XAF these days I started with chapter 7. Very clear and easy to read. I understand why XAF did not make it in this book (statement page 389) but if you're planning writing a book like this devoted to XPO & the XAF Framework I'm the first one to buy it.

Happy newyear!
