I noticed during this tutorial that there was a break just after we were shown how to alter a color property in the skin editor, and we switched to "some time later" in order to preview the collective changes.

I'm wondering given the potential quantity of property changes that might be necessary...

How long did the whole process take for the given skin?

As I'm not a graphics guy, I always wondered how one can  do this.

Now I know - if only I had a copy of Photoshop :-(

Will a less expensive product do it?

This skin transformation actually takes about 30 minutes.

We haven't used it for this purpose, but you can try to use GIMP with appropriate plug-ins. It looks like all required features are there, including batch processing, which is essential for this procedure.

We simply make a grid screenshot (say, by pressing Print Screen) and paste the image into a new document in Photoshop (or other graphic editor).
