Thinking Out Loud

May 2008 - Posts

  • DevExpress Wizard Component Suite - Gandalf would be proud...

It's always interesting learning the needs/desires of customers. I would never have guessed that a wizard control for WinForms would be so popular...

The DevExpress XtraWizard is currently in R&D and set for release with our next major update, v2008 vol 2. This purpose of this product is rather self-explanatory and as we get closer to release, we will describe its capabilities in more detail. For now, here are some screenshots of the demo app which will ship with the library.

Notes to keep in mind - this is a WinForms product.

It will be available in the following packages:

    • DXperience WinForms Edition (will not be available with source code)
    • DXperience Enterprise Edition (will be available with source code)
    • DXperience Universal Edition (will be available with source)

If you own one of the subscriptions listed above and if that subscription has not lapsed when v2008 vol 2 is released, then you will receive the XtraWizard free of charge.

  • WPF who?

It's really late here and Im stealing a bit of Julian's thunder (he'll be blogging about this stuff soon), but the Lakers came back from a 20 point deficit and won the first game of the conference finals...so since Im feeling good about things, I figured Id post a couple of images of the DXGrid for WPF - to be debuted at TechEd 2008 in Orlando.

Sorry about the quality of this one - I could have made it much more interesting...

  • The Gauge

English is an odd language - The person who decided to spell gauge in this way must be laughing at us right now. Each time I look at this word, it makes my head spin.

In any event, though we are still a ways off from DXperience v2008 vol 2, I thought you might like to see a few screenshots of our upcoming Guage control for WinForms. These are rather rudimentary images, but hopefully they'll give you a sense of the direction we are heading in. The product will be named the XtraGauge Suite and Julian will be blogging more about it shortly.

  • The Light at the End of the Silver Tunnel

As Silverlight 2 evolves and beta 2 draws near, I wanted to take the opportunity to describe the features of our upcoming Silverlight Grid control (and before the comments stack up to this blog post about WPF, yes, the WPF version is being developed and like its Silverlight counterpart, we expect to demonstrate it at TechEd and release a beta shortly thereafter).

The DevExpress Grid for Silverlight will include

    • Grouping against multiple columns
    • Sorting against multiple columns
    • Comprehensive Summary Computation support
    • Column Movement
    • Column Resizing
    • Column Auto-Width
    • Row Editing
    • Row Preview (with animation)
    • Template Support (for cell content, cell editing, row preview and headers)
    • Auto Height Support for cells, headers, and totals.
    • Virtual StackPanel Row Container (simply means we are able to handle an unlimited number of rows)
    • Focused Row and Focused Cell
    • Multi-Row Selection
    • Cell Text Wrapping
    • Vertical/Horizontal Lines
    • 4 column types for now - Text, DateEdit, Check, and Image (more to come)

Jeff and Julian recorded a brief interview about the DevExpress Grid for Silverlight, which you can watch here...

     DevExpress Grid for Silverlight Video

Once again, we will be demonstrating this product along with its WPF counterpart at TechEd 2008 (coming up on June 3) in Orlando. If you are going to be attending, feel free to stop by and say hello.

A final note...we will be announcing a very interesting licensing mechanism for this new Silverlight Grid (I promise, no one will complain once we do announce it). The announcement will be made at TechEd and Jeff will capture it on video and we will certainly blog about it as well.

  • Good Luck to CodeGear

A couple of days ago, David I, Anders O and Christine Ellis were nice enough to touch base with me to briefly discuss the news most of our Delphi/C++Builder customers already know...that Borland sold it's CodeGear division to Embarcadero.

Here's hoping that the new chapter in the product line that gave birth to DevExpress in Nov 1998, is an exciting one.

For those customers who've been writing to us asking about what the future might hold...my crystal ball just got a major tune up and I know how all of this will end up. I'm more than happy to share the information for the right fee. Smile

On a more serious note...our product plans for Delphi/C++Builder will remain the same regardless of ownership of said products. As I mentioned to David I - what matters to us is not who owns the products but whether we are forced to compete with the component palette inside Delphi/C++Builder.

On a personal note...announcements like this always trigger the proverbial "walks down memory lane" for me. When I heard the news from Vlad in the morning my mind was instantly taken back to July 1999 and BorCon in Philadelphia. It was about 8 months since the launch of our first product for Delphi - the ExpressGrid. We had decided to make a big splash...do a major sponsorship of the event. We'd hired an outfit to build our very very large booth and ship it from the West coast to the East Coast. Tom flew out to Philly in advance to make sure all went well. When I arrived, Tom said to me - you don't want to know what's going on. Not a patient person in my younger age...I told him to freakin' tell me what was going on...He replied that the booth was not in Philly and that the on-site rep from the folks building the booth had no idea where it was.

An hour of angry shouting later we learned that they had not shipped the booth in time and that only 1 day earlier they were forced to ship the massive (I really mean massive) wood/particle board structure via air cargo to Philly. To make a very long and expletive laden story short, the booth arrived and the union crew put it together just in time for the opening day.

BorCon Philly was also the event where we first met a few DevExpress team members...Julian (who was with TurboPower at the time), Mark (who was constantly followed by about a half dozen groupies), and Azret (who was in love with our products and ready to conquer the world with an app he was building).

Over the years, our business relationship with Inprise/Borland/CodeGear has given me plenty of ulcers...but the fact is that were it not for Delphi we'd not exist today. Good luck guys....here's hoping it all works out for the best.
