Thinking Out Loud

The Light at the End of the Silver Tunnel

As Silverlight 2 evolves and beta 2 draws near, I wanted to take the opportunity to describe the features of our upcoming Silverlight Grid control (and before the comments stack up to this blog post about WPF, yes, the WPF version is being developed and like its Silverlight counterpart, we expect to demonstrate it at TechEd and release a beta shortly thereafter).

The DevExpress Grid for Silverlight will include

  • Grouping against multiple columns
  • Sorting against multiple columns
  • Comprehensive Summary Computation support
  • Column Movement
  • Column Resizing
  • Column Auto-Width
  • Row Editing
  • Row Preview (with animation)
  • Template Support (for cell content, cell editing, row preview and headers)
  • Auto Height Support for cells, headers, and totals.
  • Virtual StackPanel Row Container (simply means we are able to handle an unlimited number of rows)
  • Focused Row and Focused Cell
  • Multi-Row Selection
  • Cell Text Wrapping
  • Vertical/Horizontal Lines
  • 4 column types for now - Text, DateEdit, Check, and Image (more to come)

Jeff and Julian recorded a brief interview about the DevExpress Grid for Silverlight, which you can watch here...

 DevExpress Grid for Silverlight Video

Once again, we will be demonstrating this product along with its WPF counterpart at TechEd 2008 (coming up on June 3) in Orlando. If you are going to be attending, feel free to stop by and say hello.

A final note...we will be announcing a very interesting licensing mechanism for this new Silverlight Grid (I promise, no one will complain once we do announce it). The announcement will be made at TechEd and Jeff will capture it on video and we will certainly blog about it as well.

I've been looking forward to your work.  I've long wanted a grid control to use through a browser.  The (open source) Ajax ones are very poor, and I've read 3 books on Flex, but their data controls are extremely limited - basically unusable for real apps.

Do you think there will be a combo box by the 1.0 release?  and data controls outside of the grid like in the Delphi data suite?  Eventually, I'd like being able to make 1-many forms easily.

And at one point did you ever consider building grid controls for Flex? That market is wide open.
