Thinking Out Loud

PDC 2008 - Embarcadero and Delphi

Events like PDC are great at many levels - among them is catching up with old friends. Over the last few days, we spent a fair amount of time with Nick Hodges, Michael Swindell, Anders Ohlsson, and Allen Bauer.

Clearly, everyone at Embarcadero is excited about the future of Delphi and we are looking forward to seeing the progress the product makes under Embarcadero's leadership. We are also excited about the opportunities this affords companies such as ours and by extension our loyal customers.

Needless to say, we will be putting our heads together to make sure to offer the Delphi community the very best and most innovative tools possible as we proceed forward.

Now if Mark Miller so much more productive with DXHelmet - maybe there is a chance to get back CodeRush for Delphi?

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but my dealings with Embarcadero and their support system has been less than stellar. They took a great product like DBArtisan and turned it into a pile of junk. I have to use an old version just so that I can stay productive. Their support system is pre-90’s. You email them, and they might email you back. No way to track issues or even a way to know if they created an issue unless they email you back. I installed their latest product only to find 20 errors in the first hour. All became support issues that were reproduced by the tech support guy. That is BAD! I actually told the support guy that they needed to model their support after DevExpress’! It is the best one I have EVER dealt with.

Christopher - sorry to hear about your experience. I dont know much about DBArtisan. I can only speak to the tone and tenor of my conversations with the guys on the Delphi team...all of them seem excited about what the future holds.

Ray,

I'm sure everything will work out okay for Delphi. I don't know a whole lot about Delphi or their business. I'm not sure how Delphi is licensed or how licenses are issued to the end user, but I can say that Embarcadero requires users to email support for a new license file each time they change their hardware or make a major OS change. I appreciate the way DevExpress licenses their products and because I feel that you trust and respect my good judgment, I am even more vigilant in protecting your copyrighted material! I think trust and respect goes a long way and a lot of companies forget that. I used PowerBuilder for 10 years and finally on version 11 they decided to change their licensing scheme to one similar to Embarcadero's. I felt personally insulted , so I have avoided migrating to that version. And I don't feel compelled to do so, ever! Hey, maybe you'll could buy out Sybase's Datawindow IP. They can't seem to do anything with it. ;)

Chris,

I suspect you are referring to my praise to Devexpress for their wonderful support. Top notch support! I think XPO could do better which is why I won't use it, but other than that I have found no better support anywhere!!
