Thinking Out Loud

WinForms Tab Control: Colored Tabs (coming in v2011 vol 2)

Yes - a small enhancement, but definitely one we get asked about a lot here at DevExpress...DXperience v2011 vol 2 will introduce the ability to color the background of individual tabs in any skinned paint themes.

WinForms Tab Control - Colored Tabs

Where can this new feature be of use? When used, tabs can be visually grouped by color and you can provide the appropriate visual accent for a specific tab.

Once you set colors for all or individual tabs, they will be automatically merged with the current skin.

Oh - and this feature is available for all controls providing a "tabbed" UI including the following: WinForms TabControl, TabbedMdiManager, DocumentManager and LayoutControl.

Ray,

You will definately get a drink on me for this one :D This is very exciting, it is something that I even admittedly looked at other vendors, it helps massively when users are trying to identify particular types of forms open in a MDI environment. In the end I didn't go with the other vendor as having extra dependancies just didn't seem right for a simple colored tab.

This will be the first thing I will be implementing when 2011.2 is released. Great news and great work.

Out of interest how does this go with dark skins like halloween or darkroom? Does the color only cover the skinned area, for example skinds with sloped tabs? Any chance of getting a couple more screenshots of other skins?

Again, might be a small feature but has massive impact on final product.

Great news!! We needed it as well! I looks great on these flat themes. How does it look on some of the more glassier themes like Blue?

I hope it is on the mdi tabs! That is the only place I would want to use it. I'm thinking of color tabs that indicate relationship between different tabs.

@Ray, the updated animation is perfect... absolutely brilliant implementation. Would be a little more perfect if the active tab remained colored as well, I realise this mightn't work in some tabs that only use color to represent active. If somehow you could have a lighter shade of the color or a gradient from the top to the middle of the color then continue with the skin would just allow that color grouping of tabs to remain even when selected. Other than that, it is genius.

Ha! That is what I get for skimming the text. Too many picture books when I was growing up! Thanks for pointing it out!

It seems I too am guilty of just skiming the text and paying more attention to the pictures... Now, when can I get my hands on a beta release??
