    Demos on 64 bit

It's a shame that a hot toolset like DevExpress cannot support running it's demos on a 64 bit OS. A dependence on Jet seems out of  place in a company that provides the latest and greatest tools for forward thinking developers.

I've got a quad-core X64 running Windows Vista Ultimate here and those
demos I tried just now work just fine (and very quickly). Can you let
me know which demos you tried that don't work? I can then try them out
myself, let support know and we can get it fixed. Of course, that
assumes that the drivers are present.

It's the easiest way to package data for demo purposes. Not everyone
has SQL Server set up exactly the way we'd like it (my laptop isn't
for example, I'm forever having to go into config files to modify
them). Don't see any problem with it myself, and certainly no one has
ever complained about it to my knowledge.

    Hello Bobby,

Unfortunately, this is a known issue. Since the JET driver for OleDb does not work in x64 environment, we cannot provide you with a workaround method to launch ASPxScheduler demos in x64 environment.
Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience. It's likely that we change the demo solution data provider in the future. >>

I'm not sure about the reference to ASPxScheduler, I thought I posted a report for XtraReports but apparently a lot of the demos, like the grids, use jet and apparently there is not a version of Jet for 64 bit versions of Windows.

I vote for xpo, I'd like to see lots of best practice xpo sampe code. At least the error could be trapped so that the user is not presented a big ugly browser error. Just a thought from a fan of DX and 64 bit Windows.

    Thanks,

     Bobby

    Re: Demos on 64 bit

I ran into this one a while back - I have a dual processor-dual core Opteron X64 system.  It's not just an issue just with the DX demos but affected my own apps that targetted MDFs.

The problem is that the default compilation mode in VS is AnyCPU ie: your app will be run in 64bit mode if you run it on an X64 version of Windows.   Unfortunately there is no X64 bit version of Jet (I think there was an itanium version, meh).

With winforms apps you can switch the processor flag in compile settings from the default AnyCPU to 32bit and recompile and the apps won't try to run in X64 mode.  I don't think anything can be done with ASP.NET apps, although I would suggest that the Compact edition of SQL Server may be a better solution to package data for demo purposes as it requires just 4 DLLs xcopy deployed with your app.

Indeed, do use SQL CE or Firebird or whatever embedded database. Using JET these days is just lame ;-)

    Ah, that makes sense.

Time to update our delivery mechanisms for the binary demo bits. Too
late for 2008.1 I fear, but let's see about 2008.2.

    Julian,

I was disappointed that the 8.3 demos still depend on JET and will not run on 64 bit systems.

so am i. im running 64bit Vista Ultimate. i simply cannot fathom why would devex, who very well promotes XPO, cannot simply utilize their own product for thier own demo. why not XPO it? will it do the magic?

i totally agree that we should move out from the JET. lets move to something ION Propulsion (Star Trek thingy lol).

seriously, the demo applications represents the DX components capability. if i were to do the demo your product to a potential customer that runs a 64bit Vista, the end result would probably be catastropic. they'll probably go to joe smoe's store

is this something being fixed for the 8.3 release?

    thanks

Bizarre. We were demoing on 64-bit Vista at PDC in the kiosks in the
booth and as far as I know we just installed the beta build du jour.

Let me check up and find out what's going on.

Could you let me know which ones fail for you? As I said, we were
using 64-bit Vista on those nice HP touchscreen PCs at PDC and had
nary a problem with the demos.

Well, do I have oeufs sur le visage. Apparently, unbeknownst to me,
we'd set up the demos at PDC to run in 32-bit mode, despite the OS
being 64-bit. Unhappy is not the word I'd choose to describe my frame
    of mind.

So, back I go to the dev teams.

    Re: Demos on 64 bit

The demos can be made to run on Vista 64 easily.

Open the IIS Manager, go to application pools, right click the DefaultAppPool and choose "Advanced Settings". Toggle the "Enable 32-Bit Applications" setting to true.

    Restart IIS.

Your demos should work with this configuration.

As an Alternative, you can create a new application pool with the 32-Bit applciations enableed, then go through the demo folders one-by-one changing each of the Developer Express related sub-applicaitons to use the new applicaiton pool.
