Can anyone at DX give us a rundown of planned new features to the toolset and approx delivery time for 2008 vol 3?

 too early, i'd expect to see 8.3 late november/early december. some information might start to trickle out in blogs though.

Huh? Of course, we have the feature list done and implementation
proceeds apace. We're just not ready to talk about much of it yet. I
dare say a lot will come out at PDC.

 Given that you folk have announced a Pumpkin theme addition for 2008.3, perhaps you can give us a heads up with regard to other features and enhancements?

You can find many of the changes that will be in 8.3 by going to the Support Center, searching for all the issues related to the product of your choice, and then using the filter row to only display "Processed (Implemented)". All of the recently implemented issues seem to be in the "Next Release (8.3.0)". Of course, if you scroll back far enough, you will start seeing issues that were implemented in 8.2, etc.

 While I understand what you're saying, I think the poster's question is valid.  How about giving us a heads-up instead of having to try & guess or search thru the Support Center.

Seems like it must be close.  Enough so that they could tell us what's done for certain.

We're going to be talking about the new features during this next week
on the run-up to PDC, as well as demoing at PDC itself. Mehul started
today with a blog post containing information about the
ASPxBinaryImage control. He'll be adding more about ASP.NET throughout
the week. Others. including myself, will talk about WinForms, WPF,
Silverlight, and Charts and Reports.

We have an announcement regarding CodeRush at PDC. Not before then,
though.

My advice is to subscribe to the RSS feed for our community blogs so
that you get the news as soon as it's posted.

I will say though that the teams have hit code freeze (it was just
over a week ago) and are in the process of increasing stability and
performance. The beta test is going to be just around the corner (if
we hit our targets, probably at PDC), with the actual release a couple
of weeks later.

 I, like other subscribers, would like a list of features to be included. However, like most companies, when a new release is coinciding with a show/exhibition it is nice to make such announcements there as it has a bit more of a wow factor and draws people to the stand which is what attendance (on the part of the seller) is all about. Come on folks be realistic - look at the car manufacturers that go to great lengths to disguise their new models during testing so they can reveal the finished product at some motor show or other - this is simply the way of the world.

I do wonder if some might want the list in advance in order to bemoan the lack of inclusion of their "vital" new must have feature. If that was to influence the content of the release we would be in a dire situation with respect to quality control - come on people stop looking for the Christmas presents wait until the morning, anticipation is half the fun.

I don't think that cars can be compared to component libraries. New car is sold "as is" to end user. New version of component library must be first utilized by other developers before is presented and given to end user. IOW grid is not product per se from end user point of view, whereas car is.

To give example from my experience: DXperience v6.1 brought us XtraPivotGrid suite. Great control, but it was readonly at that time. It took me about 1 week to develop set of helper classes to add editability to pivot grid. It isn't ideal, but works for our customers. DXperience v8.2 added editors support to pivot grid control. Great, but:

• Corresponding suggestion changed from "TBD" to "Implemented", no "Planned" state between.
  
• Feature was announced few days before official release
• Feature is still not mentioned on http://www.devexpress.com/Products/NET/Controls/WinForms/Pivot_Grid/whatsnew.xml.

I was perfectly unaware that DevExpress guys are going to deliver me such great and long awaited feature. It hit me out of nowhere. I would be seriously pissed off if I spent week of development time to implement my workarounds just before v8.2 release instead of 2 years ago.

DXperience is not a new toy for me. It is very important tool in my every day job. As such, it should be predictable.

My interest stems from the fact that the XAF roadmap for 2008 is somewhat underdeveloped. I understand and applaud the position that DevExpress has taken for XAF in 2008 (stability in a new product) but that doesn't change the fact that I do not have the best handle on what initiatives the company is working on surrounding the product. In order to better estimate work-efforts on upcoming projects I need a little more clarity around what DevExpress may or may not be offering.

My company (like others) pays good money to DevExpress so they can do their excellent work and provide us with tools to let us develop more effectively. I don't really view releases as Christmas presents so much as development we are paying for in advance of receipt.

I'm sure this will sound like a 'U' Turn on my part but I don't disagree with you on any of the points you mention. I think there are 2 different issues with regards to releases here - I was tackling the "other" one. When refering to the development of the suite with regards to fixes and extensions then we NEED to know when some of these things are going to happen, and at the very least if they are in the next service pack/release - this is an area where the component supplier really ought to be in accordance with the priority as seen by its customer base.

On a separate issue we have the new components like the gauges control that seemed to come "out of the blue" this I understand - you don't necessarily want the competition to ape your development direction (on the otherhand if you say nothing for too long prospective customers may go to a different suit offering these facilities already, and existing customer might purchase another component only to find 6 weeks later that it is released as part of their already paid for subscription so you could alienate your existing customerbase) - risk/benefit analysis required by DX!

I think the fine line is in that a compnent appears for WinForms and it seems to take an age sometimes to get the ASP version, I think this area should (as far as is possible) sit in the predictable camp.

 Me too! But I have also been programming computers for over 20 years and know that to promise X by such a date then to miss is probably more damaging than to not promise it then deliver early or unexpectedly. I think the most interesting point made is one that WE the existing customer base (particulary universal subscribers) have paid for this years development efforts on the part of DX (thanks Michael for that thought), not a way of thinking about it that I had previously entertained and when you say it like that we are "partners" with DX and perhaps should be treated as such - quite where this should take us I am unsure. Certainly the road map was a step in the right direction and it's this kind of level we can reasonably expect support with, perhaps it should have been a dynamic document to keep the community up-to-date with progress against "targets".

Overall I guess what this thread really shows is how fundamental the work that DX are doing is to our business's, during these financially unstable times we need more than ever to have a confidence boost that our trust/decisions have been well placed.

 I'm not asking for delivery dates.  We already know we get 3 major updates a year and v3 is usually in November.  What should be provided pretty much right after a major release is a list of features DevEx is going to attempt to put in new version and the probablity that feature will actually make it into the next version (definitely, likely, unlikely) and keep that list up to date as development progresses.  That way I can look at it and make educated decision on what I need to develop and/or what I can look/wait for in the new version.

 I have come accross in the support area mention of some SharePoint support??? I really hope so is all I can say.
