Accessibility & Export Compliance

DOCX/HTML Export — AccessibleDescription Support

Organizations subject to WCAG 2.2 and Section 508 requirements will be able to include meaningful alternative text for all embedded images and graphical elements in exported Word documents and HTML pages. With v26.1, DevExpress Reports will apply a report control's AccessibleDescription property value to DOCX and HTML export output. This capability is especially relevant for controls exported as images, such as XRPictureBox, XRBarCode, XRShape, and XRChart, where assistive technologies rely on alternative text to describe visual content.

PDF/UA Export Enhancements

Government agencies and enterprises that must comply with PDF/UA standards will benefit from the following extended PDF export capabilities in v26.1:

XRRichText content will use proper semantic tagging and group continuous text into logical paragraphs instead of word-by-word <P> tags.
The AccessibleDescription property will apply to PDF signatures and AcroForm controls so that digitally signed or form-enabled PDF documents meet accessibility requirements.
XRPageInfo controls will support paragraph-level semantic markup.

Web Reporting — Accessibility Improvements

Applications that store time zone-aware timestamps (such as financial transaction logs, audit trails, and event scheduling systems) require DateTimeOffset support to preserve the original offset for accurate data representation. With v26.1, our Report Designer's Field List will display DateTimeOffset fields and allow data binding, filter, group, and sort operations across SqlDataSource, EFDataSource, and ObjectDataSource.

End-User Experience

WinForms End-User Report Designer — Startup Optimization

We will optimize the DevExpress WinForms End-User Report Designer's startup sequence to deliver a responsive launch experience. Dock panels and UI elements will appear quickly on initial load, and transitions between Design and Preview tabs will produce seamless panel rendering.

XRLabel & XRPanel — Custom Border Styles Example

Invoice layouts, financial statements, and reports with visually distinct section separators often require independent border configuration per side. We will extend the How to Create a Custom DevExpress Report Control GitHub repository with a new example that demonstrates custom XRLabel and XRPanel controls. These custom controls will allow you to define distinct border styles and width for top, bottom, left, and right sides independently.

Web Report Designer Overhaul

This extends the DateOnly and TimeOnly support introduced in v25.1 and makes the BI Dashboard compatible with data sources that store time zone-aware timestamps.

Customization

Cards — Text and Icon Customization

KPI cards and summary panels will deliver richer visuals with custom text and icon settings. Dashboard creators will be able to customize text appearance within Card items, including font style and size. Cards will also support icon display. For example, a KPI card will be able to display a custom icon alongside a metric value with a specific font size to match organizational branding guidelines.

Dashboard Items — Margin and Padding Control

Fine-grain spacing control allows dashboard creators to achieve tighter or more spacious layouts for each individual item. We will add item-level padding and margin properties to dashboard items, with support for both uniform and individual side settings. Kiosk displays that require maximum data density and executive dashboards that benefit from generous whitespace can use these controls to achieve the desired layout.

Developers who register custom scoped services (such as multi-tenant data filters or user-specific security providers) will benefit from consistent service lifetimes across both Blazor pages and Dashboard backend operations. We plan to transition the Blazor Dashboard from traditional HTTP requests to SignalR-based transport for server communication. This change will allow scoped Blazor services registered within a SignalR circuit to function correctly with Dashboard controllers.

Unified access to designer settings. Users can customize layout, data, and appearance from a single location.

Our next major update (v25.1) is set for release in early June. This post details DevExpress Reports and DevExpress BI Dashboard-related features we expect to ship in June and describes what’s included in our Early Access Preview (EAP v25.1) build.

I encourage all active DevExpress Universal and DXperience subscribers to download and install our Early Access Preview and share thoughts/opinions with us via linked discussion DevExpress Support Center threads (links can be found in our v25.1 roadmap).

If you own an active Universal/DXperience subscription and plan to install the EAP, visit the DevExpress Download Manager to obtain the EAP build.

Early Access and CTP builds are provided solely for early testing purposes and are not ready for production use. This build can be installed side by side with other major versions of DevExpress products. Please back up your project and other important data before installing Early Access and CTP builds. Report Designer — Drag and Drop Enhancements for Date-based Field Types

We've enhanced the Report Designer Field List to offer easier access to DateTime, DateOnly and TimeOnly types used within a report's data source. Users can now expand these fields in the Field List panel to reveal associated internal properties and seamlessly bind them to report controls.

With this enhancement, you no longer need to manually specify data formatting or use expression functions when working with internal properties: simply drag and drop these properties onto existing controls to establish new data bindings or place them on the report surface to create new data-bound controls.

How to Enable This Feature

To display internal date and time properties in the Field List, activate the UserDesignerOptions.ShowFieldListDateTimeComponents property at application startup or in the DevExpress Visual Studio Report Designer settings window. This will expose the following properties:

DateOnly: Month, Year, Day
DateTime: Day, Month, Year, Hour, Minute, Second
TimeOnly: Hour, Minute, Second

Configurable Binding Modes

This capability supports two modes, managed by the UserDesignerOptions.DateTimeComponentBindingMode property. When a field is dropped from the Field List, the Report Designer automatically creates an expression binding and does one of the following:

Applies a format string (e.g., {0:%d}, {0:%M}) — useful for displaying formatted date/time values within a report.
Assigns an expression function (e.g., GetDay, GetMonth) — ideal for calculations against multiple data source fields. You can further refine expressions using the Expression Editor.

Expression Editor Integration

This enhancement also extends to the Expression Editor, where appropriate expression functions are automatically assigned when you double-click internal type properties in the Field List.

Detailed Control Over Report Element Export Operations (to Different Formats)

We replaced the CanPublish property (allowed you to manage whether a report control is displayed in a printed or exported document) with its new XRControl.CanPublishOptions counterpart.

The new property allows you to limit the list of export formats wherein a report control should appear after an export operation. In addition, you can use this new property to prohibit the printing of a specific report control(s).

New Report Measurement Units

WinForms Visual Studio

We extended the ReportUnit enumeration to include Inches and Millimiteres values. Report creators can now work with measurement values directly, eliminating the need to convert hundreds or tenths to integer units (when sizing and positioning report controls). Once you change report units to new values, the properties panel will display report control size/position as float numbers within the properties panel:

Web Report Designer — External Drag & Drop Operations

The DevExpress Web Report Designer supports drag & drop operations from outside the browser window (making it easier to add content to your report documents):

Image files: Drag & drop an image file onto the report surface to create an XRPictureBox.
Text files: Drop a TXT file to create an XRLabel, or drop an RTF, DOCX, or HTML file to insert anXRRichText control with associated file content.
PDF files: Drag & drop a PDF file to insert an XRPdfContent control.
Existing controls: Dropping a file onto an existing report control updates content with new file data.

Web Report Designer — Quickly Create Header Tables

DevExpress Web Report Designer allows designers to quickly create table headers. When you design a report, select a set of data fields in the Field List—an entire query, a table, or individual fields while holding Ctrl. To create a table with data field names, press Shift while dragging the table onto the report design area. The following video illustrates this new feature in action:

Standalone Report Parameters Panel for React

The standalone Report Parameters Panel is a new React component that arranges report parameter editors. It retrieves report parameter details from a DevExpress report instance passed from the backend.

Use this component to programmatically create a report, then export or email it without displaying a preview to the end user. The component reduces memory usage because it eliminates the need to generate report images in the background and transfer them to a client application.

Report Designer — AI-powered Report Localization

A new AI-powered extension for both our Web and WinForms Report Designer components will introduce AI-powered localization for report translation. Once you enable this capability, the Localization Editor will feature a new "Localize with AI" button that automatically collects all static strings within a report and sends it to your preferred AI service for translation. Web Report Viewer — AI-powered Inline Report Translation

Once enabled, the AI-powered context menu in the DevExpress Web Report Viewer will include a new "Translate Inline" option. Clicking this option translates selected content into the specified language directly within the previewed document.

DevExpress Report viewers will also include an option to print/export translated content (with a notification prompting users about AI-generated content before processing).

This enhancement builds upon our AI-powered translation functionality (detailed in What's New in v24.2). While the original AI-powered feature displays translations in a separate Report Viewer panel, this new option allows users to translate report content directly within the preview and print/export the translated document.

Current Limitations

Text size constraints: Report content is displayed using fixed-size text bricks, which do not yet adjust dynamically for longer translations (e.g., German words tend to be longer than their English equivalents).
Page-by-page translation: This feature can only translate one page at a time within the preview.

We plan to address these limitations in the future and your feedback will help us set priorities.

DateOnly & TimeOnly Types Support (Leave Your Feedback)

DevExpress BI Dashboard supports DateOnly and TimeOnly values across all supported platforms. DateOnly and TimeOnly can be used for the following:

Conditional Formatting — Create format rules with DateOnly and TimeOnly types.

Dashboard Item Support includes:

Grid and Pivot — Bind columns to DateOnly and TimeOnly types and select different grouping intervals (for example, “Year to Month,” “Day-Month-Year,” “Year to Day,” “Day of Week,” and hour/minute-based intervals).

Range Filter — Use date-based predefined intervals (for example, last year, last quarter, last 7 days, etc.).

Web Dashboard creators have the ability to display a parameters window and prompt a user to input parameter values before a dashboard loads and aggregates data. Dashboard items display this state and display a "Waiting for Parameter Values" message to guide users.

DevExpress Reporting — Early Access Preview (v24.2) — Important Changes, SVG-based Preview Rendering, AI-Powered Enhancements and New Barcodes

Our next major update (v24.2) is set for release in early December. This post details DevExpress Reports-related features we expect to ship in December and describes what’s included in our early access preview (EAP v24.2) build. I encourage all active DevExpress Universal and DXperience subscribers to download and install our EAP and share thoughts/opinions with us via the DevExpress Support Center.

If you own an active Universal/DXperience subscription and are ready to install the EAP, simply navigate to the DevExpress Download Manager to obtain the EAP build.

This EAP may not include all features/products we expect to ship in our v24.2 release cycle. As its name implies, the EAP offers an early preview of what we expect to ship in two months. For additional information on what you can expect, refer to our DevExpress Reporting Roadmap v24.2

Important Changes in v24.2

Pango-based Cross-Platform Drawing Engine End-Of-Life

Because of our commitment to .NET 8 and following the release of our cross-platform SkiaSharp-based engine last year, we have refactored our source code to remove all GDI+ related method calls for non-Windows environments (libgdiplus) and our Pango-based engine.

We will discontinue the availability of the DevExpress.CrossPlatform.Printing.DrawingEngine package once .NET 9 is released. We encourage you to migrate to the SkiaSharp-based DevExpress Drawing Graphics library if you are deploying DevExpress Reports-powered apps to non-Windows environments. Refer to the following help topic for additional information/guidance: Use DevExpress Reporting on macOS and Linux.

AzureCompatibility Property for Windows Apps Environment Has Been Deprecated

Multiple DevExpress products (Reporting, BI Dashboard, and Office File API) ship with printing and data export functionality for restricted environments such as Microsoft Azure (where certain GDI/GDI+ calls related to metafiles and font objects are unavailable). The AzureCompatibility.Enable property manages this functionality.

In our v23.2 release cycle, we ended support for capabilities offered by this property toggle for non-Windows environments. With v24.2, we will phase out this toggle for Windows environments as well. We recommend that you use our Skia-based Cross-Platform Graphics Engine if targeting cloud/restricted environments.

Web Report Viewer — SVG Preview

The DevExpress Web Document Viewer will ship with a PreviewRenderFormat property (to enable SVG-based print preview functionality).

Use the PreviewRenderFormat property to specify preview rendering format: SVG or PNG. SVG allows users to preview reports with the highest fidelity - maximizing sharpness and clarity at any zoom level.

One of the advantages of this enhancement is its ability to reduce the Web Report Viewer's memory footprint when transferring report page data between the server and client. Our tests indicate that this improvement is most pronounced when zoom level is set above 100%. When rendering mode switches to vector images, zooming is managed by the browser. This approach eliminates the need to make additional requests to the reporting backend to re-render the report and it introduces native text selection within the viewer.

Additionally, we have added a PageRenderFormat.Auto value for the PreviewRenderFormat property. With this option, the Web Report Viewer automatically switches its rendering mode to SVG when the document zoom exceeds 100% (to optimize performance in multi-page mode). In single-page mode, pages are rendered in SVG.

To illustrate the difference in rendering quality, refer to the following screenshots (comparing bitmap and SVG rendering modes at a zoom level of 500%).

Web Report Viewer & Blazor Report Viewer — AI-Powered Enhancements

You can now integrate AI-powered Summarize and Translate features into the DevExpress ASP.NET Core Web Report Viewer and Blazor Report Viewer. New UI elements allow users to review "core insights" associated with a given report (using Generative AI summaries) and translate report documents/pages/selected content to a desired language using AI-powered translation tools.

DevExpress does not offer a REST API or ship any built-in LLMs/SLMs. To use this feature, you need to have an active subscription to Azure/Open AI and obtain the REST API endpoint, key, and model deployment name. These variables must be specified at runtime to enable DevExpress AI-Powered Extensions in your application.

To get started, your project must meet the following prerequisites:

An Active DevExpress Universal or DXperience Subscription that grants access to download Early Access Preview v24.2 build.

Web Report Viewer — AI Integration Examples

We have added two new examples that showcase the capabilities of our AI-focused APIs (by integrating Open AI Asisstants into the DevExpress Web Report Viewer and DevExpress Web End-User Report Designer). These examples also highlight the use of the brand-new DevExtreme JavaScript DxChat component.

The first example embeds a Copilot-inspired chat window within the DevExpress Web Report Viewer. As you would expect, users can ask natural language questions to analyze data and obtain AI-powered insights.

Similarly, our second example embeds a virtual assistant in the DevExpress Web End-User Report Designer. This allows users to ask natural language questions regarding the report design process.

Native Report Viewer for Blazor — Report Parameter Validation

You can now handle the ParameterRequestValueChanged event to implement validation rules for report parameter editors in the DevExpress Blazor Report Viewer.

New Aztec Barcode

We extended barcode support and now allow you to generate the Aztec code. Aztec barcodes offer a compact/efficient way to encode large amounts of data without requiring a quiet zone, making them ideal for space-constrained documents.

To create the Aztec Barcode, set the XRBarCode.Symbology property value to AztecCode and specify appropriate barcode properties:

New Micro QR Code

You can now create Micro QR Codes (a smaller alternative to traditional QR Codes). Micro QR Codes are suitable for space-limited documents, where only small amounts of data (35 characters or 128 bits) require encoding.

To create a Micro QR Code, set the XRBarCode.Symbology property value to MicroQRCode and specify appropriate barcode properties:

Export Enhancements

HTML Export — Preserve Rotated Text

The XRLabel control now preserves text rotation defined by its Angle property (supported angles are 90 degrees, 180 degrees, and 270 degrees, and their negative counterparts) when exporting reports to HTML files.

PDF Export — Export Bookmarks

The new PdfExportOptions.ExportBookmarks property allows you to control bookmark visibility in exported PDF documents.

Resolve Missing Fonts

We added a new DXFontRepository.QueryNotFoundFont event for fonts used within a document but missing in an application’s hosting environment. This feature allows you to identify and resolve missing fonts by adding them to DXFontRepository before document generation begins (using the e.FontFileData event argument). In the following code snippet, we use Google Fonts to locate/add fonts to DXFontRepository :

Reporting — New Expression Functions (v24.1)

As you may already know, DevExpress Reports offers an adapted layout option that allows you arrange, shape, and organize data in the most appropriate manner. One such data shaping option is grouping. You can arrange data in nested and multi-field groups within the detail band of a table report. In our v24.1 release cycle, we introduced several functions that allow you to obtain indexes for different group elements. These new functions include:

CurrentRowIndexInGroup() — returns the current row’s index within the group.

GroupIndex(level) — locates the parent group row at the specified nesting level and returns that row’s index.

NextRowColumnValue(columnName) — obtains the next row and returns the value from the specified column.

PrevRowColumnValue(columnName) — obtains the previous row and returns the value from the specified column.

In this blog post, I'll detail a few usage scenarios and illustrate how you can obtain/manage different group elements with the functions listed above.

Group Numbering by Index

In this usage scenario, I'll build a report that displays a multi-level numbered list. To achieve this, my report controls will use GroupIndex() and CurrentRowIndexInGroup() functions in their data binding expressions (to return group and row indexes).

Table cells specify the following data binding expressions:

“Category Name” group:

GroupIndex(1) + 1 — displays indexes of root-level groups.

“Discontinued” group:

GroupIndex(1) + 1 + '.' + (GroupIndex(0) + 1) — adds second-level group indexes.

The detail band:

GroupIndex(1) + 1 + '.' + (GroupIndex(0) + 1) + '.' + (CurrentRowIndexInGroup(0) + 1) — adds row indexes.

Output: A report that groups products by category and discontinued state:

Change the Appearance of Individual Groups

In this usage scenario, I'll apply different styles to groups in the table to distinguish groups when associated group headers are empty.

The table's StyleName property is bound to the following expression:

Locate the Last Row in a Group

In this example, I use an expression to highlight the product with the lowest statewide sales (compared to expected sales).

The table's Font.Bold property is bound to the following expression:

Our development plans are aligned with Microsoft's .NET Life Cycle and as such, we'll be ending .NET 7 (ended in May 2024) and .NET 6 support (will end November 2024) with our next major update (v24.2).

The minimal .NET Framework supported version will be v4.6.2 as it is the lowest framework version supported by Microsoft.

And finally, the oldest supported version of the Visual Studio IDE will be 2019 (our surveys indicate that 2019 and 2022 are used by the vast majority of our customers).

JsonDataSource — Transition to System.Text.Json

In our last release cycle, we updated the source code for all DevExpress products so that they no longer reference the third-party Newtonsoft.Json assembly and completed the migration to System.Text.Json assembly/NuGet package for .NET-based products. In this release cycle v24.2, we'll complete the migration process and finalize the transition to System.Text.Json assembly/NuGet package.

Pango-based Cross-Platform Drawing Engine End-Of-Life

With the introduction of the Pango-based Cross-Platform Drawing Engine in 2021, DevExpress products were among the first to offer document rendering capabilities for .NET apps running in non-Windows environments (such as Linux or macOS). Leveraging Pango helped us to fine-tune text drawing and measurement output produced by GDI+, achieving pixel-perfect report printing and export operations.

Starting with .NET 7, GDI+ (System.Drawing library) APIs were designated for use in Windows-only environments.

In light of our plans to adopt .NET 8 this year,and following the release of our cross-platform SkiaSharp-based engine last year, we will refactor our source code to remove all method calls related to GDI+ in non-Windows environments (libgdiplus) and the Pango-based engine. We will discontinue availability of the DevExpress.CrossPlatform.Printing.DrawingEngine package.

Deprecation of the AzureCompatibility Property for Apps Windows Environment

In v23.2, we ended support for the functionality offered by this property toggle for non-Windows environments. In our upcoming release, we plan to phase out this toggle for Windows-based environments as well. This decision will allow us to concentrate our development/maintenance efforts in a single direction, giving developers the ability to use the aforementioned products in cloud/restricted environments via our Skia-based Cross-Platform Graphics Engine.

We will add support for Microsoft Entra (formerly Azure Active Directory) authentication in SqlDataSource for Microsoft Azure SQL databases. We will extend the MsSqlAuthorizationType enumeration with the following types (mirroring those found in .NET):

Additionally, we intend to transmit traces to the .NET Aspire Dashboard to monitor the health of report-related infrastructures deployed to cloud environments.

Store Exported Documents in Azure Blob and AWS S3 Bucket

Web Report Viewer — SVG Print Preview

In our next release, we will introduce an option to enable SVG-based print preview functionality within the DevExpress Web Report Viewer. This enhancement will reduce the viewer's memory footprint when transferring report page data between the server and client (i.e., when navigating through the document, zooming the document, etc.). This enhancement will also enable users to preview reports with high fidelity using Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), ensuring sharp and clear representations of report elements.

Export Enhancements

HTML Export — Preserve Rotated Text

We will introduce expanded text rotation options for reports exported to HTML. With this update, the XRLabel control in resulting HTML files will preserve the text rotation defined by its Angle property (supported angles are 90 degrees, 180 degrees, and 270 degrees, and their negative counterparts). This enhancement will ensure that your DevExpress Reports-powered document's text orientation is accurately maintained during HTML export, providing a consistent visual appearance across different formats.

PDF Export — Export Bookmarks

We will introduce a new property to allow you to control the visibility of bookmarks in the resulting PDF document. This feature allows you to either hide or display bookmarks as needed, providing a customized navigation experience for users of your exported PDFs.

DateOnly & TimeOnly Support

We will introduce support for DateOnly and TimeOnly values across DevExpress Reports. This update will allow you to utilize the aforementioned types when:

New AI-Powered Enhancements

We will integrate AI-Powered Summarize and Translate features into our Report Viewer components. These enhancements will allow users to quickly understand/analyze core insights associated with a given report (using Generative AI summaries) and convert report documents to a desired language with AI-powered translation tools.

To leverage these capabilities, you will need to use your own Microsoft Azure Open AI API key or use offline open-source models powered by Ollama and/or Onnx Runtime.

Report Designer — Dimension Notations

To simplify the report design process, v24.2 will introduce dimension notations within the DevExpress Report Designer. When you resize controls, the designer will provide precise visual feedback and display dimension notations based on a specified ReportUnit property value (such as inches, centimeters, or pixels).

Aztec barcodes offer a compact/efficient way to encode large amounts of data without requiring a quiet zone, making them ideal for space-constrained documents.

A new API will allow you to implement custom validation rules for report parameter inputs, including enforcing mandatory parameters.

Reporting — Create Drill-Through Reports (v23.2)

As you may know, a drill-through report allows users to open a "new" report by clicking a link within a main/active report document. Drill-through reports generally include detailed information about a given item within the original report. For example, the original report may include a sales summary with a list of categories. By using drill-through reports, a user can click a category in the sales summary list to open a detailed category report.

Benefits of Drill-Through Reports

Enhanced readability: By using drill-through reports, you can eliminate visual/information noise (by using separate summary and detail reports).

Centralize location for KPIs: To improve information clarity/understanding, use a summary report to link multiple reports with different detail data.

Display information using multiple viewpoints: Leverage drill-through reports and link multiple reports to display the same dataset using different information perspectives. This approach allows you to analyze the same data with different visualization options/strategies (rather than a single visualization in a standalone report).

Drill-Through vs Drill-Down vs SubReport

Devexpress Reports ships with a variety of interactivity features including Drill-Through, Drill-Down, and SubReport.

The primary difference between each of these is as follows: drill-down and subreports are embedded into the body of the main report with master-detail relationships and groups. A drill-through report is only processed and rendered when the user clicks the drill-through link in the main report.

Unlike a drill-through report, a subreport is processed as part of the main report. You can use this method if you cannot define a direct relationship in the data source (use different data sets).

Drill-Down provides granular information within a specific report (dataset). Drill-down can be created using a single view and dynamically displayed by clicking an element (in other words, you can drill down from the top level to the bottom level using the same visualization).

Drill-Through displays a different data perspective. Drill-Through uses a selected element, may use filters, and applies them to the report you are "drilling" through. A drill-through report includes parameters passed to it by the main report. When you set a drill-through report link on a report item, set a value for the parameter of the target report as well. When the user clicks the link in the active/main report, the target detail report opens and displays the information for that specific value.

Create a Drill-Through Action

To define a drill-through action, add a NavigateToReportAction to a supported report control, such is XRTableCell or XRLabel. NavigateToReportAction allows you to specify the detail report instance or URL used to define a master-detail relationship and obtain a collection of detail report parameter bindings.

Angular: Native Report Viewer and Report Designer Integration

DevExpress continues its commitment to client-side web frameworks. Recent efforts in this regard include the release of the DevExpress Angular Report Viewer — a component that was recently redesigned as a native Angular component...a component that offers straightforward customization and management of templates using native Angular tools.

Our native Angular Report Viewer does not rely on the Knockout JavaScript library. We implemented a simpler internal component design that allows components to be built on other JavaScript platforms with minimal code extensions (alongside improved typing and template handling).

The Future
