  • IE9 Release Candidate - Help Test Your ASP.NET Website

Help us test Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) release candidate web browser by downloading a special DXperience ASP.NET daily build.

    Why help test?

In addition to all of the testing that we do internally, your feedback helps us craft a better and stable release once IE9 is officially released.

And it's fun to try out new technologies.

    How to get started

First, download IE9 release candidate and install it:

    Download IE9

Then download and install this nightly build of DXperience v2010 vol 2.5 (Build 11048). It contains all known IE9 support bug fixes:

    http://downloads.devexpress.com/Share/DXP/110217/DXperience-10.2.5.11048.exe (119061424 bytes)

    Installed now what?

Once installed, upgrade your ASP.NET web project that uses DevExpress ASP.NET products using the project converter tool:

Recompile your ASP.NET web project to the new version and execute/run it in IE9 release candidate browser.

    Report Issues

Please report any issues or bugs to the support center using this link:

    http://www.devexpress.com/Support/Center/Issues/CreateIssue.aspx?issuetype=bugreport

Please populate the Support Center ticket's Revision field with this build number (11048):

    DevExpress Support Revision Number

I also recommend tracking the (S35721) suggestion for updates on IE9 compatibility.

    Thank You

Your participation in this early IE9 feedback program is invaluable. Thank you for your help in improving DevExpress ASP.NET products for everyone!

  • ASP.NET MVC Case Study - EnduranceDiary.com Chooses DevExpress

Check out this video case study of EnduranceDiary.com which is an ASP.NET MVC 3 site that uses DevExpress ASP.NET MVC Extensions:

    image

    What is EnduranceDiary.com?

EnduranceDiaryTeamEndurance Diary is a site for creating and tracking workouts, physical challenges, group events, and other fitness activities as well as sharing that information with your friends.

Using their passion for software and personal endurance training, Gary and his friends created this website that has all of the functionality they wanted in one place.

    Features

The Endurance Diary website helps you log and track your workouts and includes a social aspect with sharing. It also integrates things like:

    • Track workouts and events
    • Create Teams
    • Register gear
    • Import GPS device data
    • Google Maps Integration
    • Social sharing through website
    • Security (so you only share with who and what you want)
    • Twitter integration

    Why Choose DevExpress MVC Extensions?

The EnduranceDiary.com team chose DevExpress MVC Extensions because:

Why we chose to use DevExpress for our controls

Endurance Diary was built using ASP.NET MVC. During the design process for the site we looked at the controls available from other vendors and in the end we chose to use the DevExpress MVC Extensions hands down. DevExpress Controls allow us to create a rich web experience for our users. With features including themes and support for client-side/server-side interaction as well as consistency of the code within controls (ClientSideEvents, Settings, Properties, etc) and great performance it was a no brainer to use their controls for our site.

Endurance Diary is running on DevExpress XPO in the backend. DevExpress's ORM Data mapping tool allows us to transform our Business Entity objects into true database tables and makes them first class citizens in our code. We had the choice of using EF4, nHibernate, or other ORM type vendors out there, however we chose XPO due to its ease of use and strong feature set. The performance we see is awesome with 1-3 second page loads. We also love the fact that we don’t have one huge data model to work with which is popular when using DataSets or EF4. I like that XPO lets me treat each entity as its own separate class without the extra work of mapping properties within XML. For this project XPO was a first choice solution and we don't regret a bit of it.

    Just Do It

Thanks Gary and the EnduranceDiary.com team for developing this useful website which helps and inspires you to exercise more often. Smile

  • ASP.NET File Upload Control - New Themes Support (available now in v2011.1)

The ASP.NET Upload control is getting a fantastic makeover with full support for all DevExpress ASP.NET themes! ASPNET_UploadControl_Themes_2011_1

    Themes Support

The ASP.NET upload control gives you the ability to upload files with a bunch other great features like multiple uploads and a progress panel.

Unfortunately, it didn't have support for our stunning ASP.NET themes like Office 2010, Red Wine, etc.

Good news! In the current DXperience v2011 volume 1 release, we've added full support for appearance customization of our UploadControls.

    MVC and WebForms

Both the ASP.NET MVC UploadControl and our WebForms version, ASPxUploadControl, will support the new Themes and appearance customization feature.

    2011 Roadmap - On Schedule

In December 2010, I sat with my ASP.NET team and we created the 2011 DevExpress ASP.NET Roadmap. I'm happy to report that this feature is available now in DXperience 2011.1!

What do you think of the new appearance customization and themes support of our ASP.NET upload controls?

  • Video: Learn How Good C# Habits Can Encourage Bad JavaScript Habits

Check out this informative jQuery/JavaScript webinar video from Elijah Manor on how "Good C# Habits Can Encourage Bad JavaScript Habits":

DevExpress JavaScript jQuery Webinar - Good C# Habits Can Encourage Bad JavaScript Habits

Elijah shows you how to maintain good habits when developing in JavaScript and jQuery. Here's a quick synopsis from Elijah about the webinar:

It seems that far too many people come to jQuery thinking that their previous C# knowledge will help them be successful at client-side scripting. In many cases, you can be successful with this approach, however, the more JavaScript you write you will inevitably find yourself uncovering strange bugs because you didn't take time to learn JavaScript properly. This session is targeted for developers that use jQuery, but haven't invested adequate time to learn some of the foundational JavaScript concepts that differ from C#. If you would like to avoid some of these common mistakes when moving from C#, then please join me as I try to explain some of the differences.

  • ASP.NET MVC 2 - Lighter Project Templates

Check out these useful updates to the DevExpress ASP.NET MVC 2 Project Templates.

    Hybrid Empty Project Template

To match the new MVC 3 project templates, we've updated our ASP.NET MVC 2 project templates to make them lighter.

Visual Studio 2010 allows you to create either a new empty web project or one with a basic layout and login capabilities. And it provides a lot of other project template types too.

Because we didn't want to include too many new project templates, our new MVC 3 project templates are a compromise between the full and empty VS2010 project templates.

Here's what the new project template looks like:

DevExpress ASP.NET MVC 2 Project Templates

In the updated project template, there is:

    • one master page
    • one empty view page (Index)
    • one Home controller with an action for the Index view
    • and no Login functionality (like our previous project template)

Of course, all of the necessary scripts, style sheets and references are added for you to use DevExpress MVC Extensions. This makes it easier for you to start with a clean MVC 2 web project to use DevExpress MVC Extensions.

    Available In v2010.2.5

These new project templates are available starting with minor release DXperience v2010.2.5.
