Sneak peek: VCL Breadcrumb editor (coming in v2011 vol. 2)

14 September 2011

This is one of those controls where a picture (in this case an animated GIF) is worth a thousand words. Click to enlarge the image.

Breadcrumbs

In essence, the control replicates the breadcrumb display of Windows 7’s Explorer. You can use the editor to navigate through some tree hierarchy of names – in the demo, your file system – with the ability to select components of the path as a drop down and select subcomponents. You can also use the editor to type the path, and the control will display possible matching paths.

This control will be available in v2011 vol. 2, and will come with the example DevExpress Explorer demo from which this animation was captured.

Interesting... one note though, the drop down list isn't the correct width, it doesn't line up with the dropdown button.

Also the obviously question... 12.1 for WinForms version ? :D

@Michael: We fully replicated the Windows Explorer behavior. The drop-down list is not aligned with the drop-down button by default. However, the list is sizable, so users can adjust its size and align it with the drop-down button if necessary.

@Iskandar: Thanks, we are glad you liked it! Stay tuned for more v2011 vol 2 sneak peek blog posts!

Hi,

Is it "only" a new shellcontrol ? Or is it possible to customize its internal items ? (it's only a "special view" a tree structure...)

Regards

@Walid: For your convenience, we implemented two editor control types: generic control and shell control. The former allows you to dynamically populate drop-down lists with data. The latter is derived from the generic one - it automatically populates drop-down lists with file system items.

This is a very special case: dot net developers are asking to get what VCL will have. Usually it is the other way around.
