WinForms/WPF/WinUI Survey - Decide What's Coming Next to Your Desktop App

News
20 December 2021

With 2021 nearing an end, we are preparing our 2022 roadmaps across all supported .NET desktop platforms (WinForms, WPF, WinUI). Before we finalize our plans, we want to hear from our loyal users and learn more about your new requirements and long-term desktop development needs.

For instance - are you interested in emerging platforms like WinUI or Uno? Are you considering modernization efforts or working towards accessibility compliance? Do you have an important usage scenario that cannot be implemented with existing DevExpress desktop components? Answers to these questions (and many more) will help us refine our 2022 development strategy.

The following survey contains dynamic questions based on responses you make. The survey will take approximately 4-7 minutes to complete. If you would like to discuss your requirements personally with a member of the DevExpress team, feel free to leave your contact information at the end of the survey.

Delphi VCL controls are pretty much behind .Net counterparts. And it’s getting worse with every version. So we are clearly pushed toward .Net development. But I guess that is future to come.

I can agree with VCL. I remember when first time started using it and it was circa 20 years ago,

When will winforms designer work in VS 2020?

I'd love to see a separate winforms designer which does only one thing - designing winforms - and it does it well. I personally think any IDE that has built in form designer is flawed. Designers are for UI folks, Editors are for developers. Two distinct roles two tools. Simple as that.

Awesome job. Thanks.

Please finally accelerate Blazor development. It is almost ridiculous how far the Blazor components and there in particular the DataGrid or Grid is from the functionality behind the other Grid components on other platforms (e.g. Batch edit / Export to PDF, DOCX, etc.. / advanced table header sorting and filtering / hierarchical grid / and so on).

Also, we have been waiting for the Blazor Spreadsheet component for nearly two years now and it is no longer referenced in any blog entry. I hope this is not a bad omen ...

But don't get me wrong, you have great products, you have an excellent support and we like the work with DevExpress! Really good job!

Microsoft is pushing .NET in multi-platform direction and even though I do not care about that from runtime perspective (99% of my customers use windows), I highly care about it from developer perspective.

I really like macOS with M1(X) chips and I do most of my development work on macOS. Microsoft is creating native Visual Studio for macOS and Visual Studio Code has already matured to great dev environment which I use daily for Web API and Web projects.

For mobile apps I am using Flutter and Android Studio, but would very much like to switch to C# and Visual Studio.

This leaves desktop development for which I need to RDC to Windows virtual machine.

Pitty :-), since we are closer than ever with MAUI/WinUI to have multi-platform development on Visual Studio, .NET 6 and C#.

We are not trying to push anyone towards .NET development. We are doing the best we can given market realities/size. Believe it or not, many of us are big-believers in Delphi/CBuilder - some of us still have wonderful memories of Turbo Pascal. We also have a great relationship with Embarcadero and our extremely loyal VCL users. While I agree that we can do more, we have to be wise and cautious. Unfortunately, the rules of business cannot be suspended simply because we love a given platform. I'm more than happy to work with any of you to help promote the virtues of Delphi/CBuilder to our developer community. A growing market helps everyone...If you have specific thoughts in this regard, do email me at rayn@devexpress.com

Life is a beautiful thing. What makes life especially beautiful is that we can all agree to disagree. Personally speaking, I'd put our VCL product line against any other. Again, personally speaking, I would choose DevExpress each and every time for a new VCL-based project. But that's just my personal opinion (though biased, I think I can back up my belief with facts). This does not mean we do not have room to improve - we do. Just means we've done a pretty good job over the years. Lot's of people have made quite a bit of income from our efforts. Hopefully you feel the same. If you do not, please email me at rayn@devexpress.com and I'll be more than happy to discuss your concerns in greater detail.

The WinForms designer - I have a rather explicit metaphor to offer in this regard, but I won't use it. Instead, I'll explain the problem this way - It's a battle we did not volunteer for, but one we are forced to fight. We continue to do what we can in this regard.

We don't expect to offer a reporting tool for Delphi - as I've mentioned in other comments, this is not a function of desire. This is a function of market size and market realities. If Embarcadero reaches out to us and asks us to work together on a reporting/dashboard tool, we'll figure out a way to make it happen. But on our own, we may not recoup our dev/support investment in the short term. Stinks, I know. Just the way of the world....

I don't believe Aristotle addressed the question Plutarch raised a few centuries after his death: "which came first, the chicken or the egg." I'm no Aristotle (nor Plutarch), but I have to grapple with this question in regards to product development. In small market segments, it's difficult to know whether the hen preceeds the egg, or vice versa. We are in no position to make markets - we simply react to how the market behaves.

Ray,

I like your product and initial purchase is really good value.

I was commenting on the value of subscription. Sometimes I click on the blogs about new features and think this is cool, I can use it, then I notice it is only for WinForms, which makes me feel robbed when I have to upgrade only for compatibility with the new Delphi (something I had to do just minutes ago).

I wish these two platforms would have similar sets of controls, you already have them in WinForms so it should be relatively easy to port them to VCL. Saying VCL is far behind is not generic phrase if you implement some features with 4-6 years delay after WinForms.

I am a Delphi users for many years. Your products are the best and I have tried them all.  I also agree that Delphi development is behind your other products. I guess I understand that. However, if you admit that, why do you still charge full price?  Secondly I do not understand why I can't at least get up to date samples and help from your web site. It is really getting difficult to find any documentation. Seems silly that I pay you and rely on google to find answers to simple questions.  Your support team is great when I can give a specific "sample" project but that is not always possible.  Happy New Year to all at DevExpress.

Honestly, I would love to see the DevExpress team look into AvaloniaUI.  Jetbrains has adopted the framework for some of its tools and it runs extremely well.  It is working on mobile support at the moment and I find the style system much nicer than plain old WPF.  I believe it will continue to gain popularity and grow within the community.

I would like a grid that queries data after typing in the search field. Some possibilities:

For instance:

Imagine that I type "Test" in the search box. It queries the database "Select Column1, Column2, ColumnN where Column1 like %Test% or Column2 like %Test% or ColumnN like %Test%".

One could have also an option to set a minimum of typed characters, to prevent querying very short terms.

Or it queries only after pressing enter or clicking the button 'Search'.

Many thanks in advance,

Mihai

DevExpress is a development kit with unparalleled features, but because of this, the learning curve is quite lengthy. It is recommended to have an introductory document so that novices can quickly enter and lower the learning threshold.
For example, what are the basic changes from TextBox to ASPxTextBox? This is getting started. Next, what functions are added to ASPxTextBox? This is the subject of advanced.
In any case, your company's service team is the best of all software companies in the world, allowing developers to quickly get answers to any technical problems, whether difficult or stupid. This is a powerful reason to buy and recommend your company’s software products.
thank you all.

DevExpress (WPF) is very nice and polished, good support, a lot of features and it is nicely extensible. All around a very awesome product. Which makes it just so very sad it is so very slow.

  • either 5-10 seconds to start the application (pre-load all resources) or,
  • the first time users opens different views/windows there is a lagspike of 500 ms

  • Same with Rich Edit Control, there is a noticeable delay from I click on the keyboard till the character is on screen (50-100 ms). And there are just features all around Rich Edit Control that takes forever to run, like export to HTML (just generating the text string, not saving to a file) may take multiple seconds. It is so annoying not being able to give my users a fast experience due to all the different small slowdowns (a few 100-500 ms just kills the feel) all over the place in DevExpress.

I've been using DevExpress for over 15 years, mostly for WinForms and Reports development.  And it's been great.  But recently, it feels much more difficult.  To use .NET Core with WinForms there is a weird workaround to get things to work.  So at this point we are still using .NET Framework for anything that requires a GUI.  And WinForms on Visual Studio 2022 still seems unworkable.  It's the first time I've considered moving to another tools provider.

We've used DevExpress Winforms for the past 10 years, and it's continues to be amazing. What you get for the price with DevExpress is simply amazing. There's some n^2 stuff which I wish would could be improved in the VGridControl, but I understand the market is shrinking and it isn't worth time time. We just started using the Spreadsheet control in a big way and it's really opened our eyes to a whole new way of doing things - and it was just included for free with our subscription! Thank you to the support team as well for your help over the years as well.

We use DevExpress WinForms and have about 1000 Coded UI test cases our software releases are dependent upon.  We are in the process of converting the existing Coded UI test cases to run on WinAppDriver.

This is a monumental task and will take time.  While this conversion is in progress we require current DevExpress versions to continue support of Coded UI.

Thank you,

@Daniel We are happy to hear that you like our components and they meet your business needs. I'd like to mention that we constantly improve our WinForms components line. Starting with v21.2, we introduced the Grid Title, Record Headers, and Record Comparison features in Vertical Grid (see the What’s New page for details: Vertical Grid). If you have any suggestions on Vertical Grid, we'd be more than happy to hear from you. Please share your ideas either in these public comments, or via a private Support Center ticket.

@SFC Thank you for your feedback. Indeed, converting thousands of Coded UI tests to WinAppDriver tests sounds like a lot of work. Although we are not going to drop CodedUI support, Microsoft announced Coded UI deprecation in the upcoming Visual Studio versions. Until then, our CodedUI extension will remain in our WinForms suite. At present, Microsoft recommends migration to Selenium and Appium testing tools and so do we (see this blog post for details: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/devops/changes-to-coded-ui-test-in-visual-studio-2019/). Should you face any difficulties with the migration, we are more than happy to assist you.
