Updated CHM and PDF Documentation

This is a quick update to the previous article, in which Mehul discusses the CHM and PDF documentation for all DXperience products. These docs are useful if you like to work off-line, or want to print PDF files, and read the hard copy of our documentation.

So, what was updated?

1. Now you can download the documentation for DXperience v2008 vol 1, including help files for our recently released ASPxHTMLEditor, ASPxSpellChecker and ASPxTreeList controls.

2. The PDF help file for every product is now accompanied by a Table of Contents file, which contains the list of all help topics from the main PDF file, as well as their page numbers. You can find this file in the same zip archive that contains the main PDF file.

If you're interested in getting our CHM or PDF help files, please see the related Knowledge Base article.

I would still like to see a Word doc file for the end user XtraReport designer, something that we can modify to our needs so that we can provide our customers with documentation on how to use the product...

I agree with Charles ! A End User XtraReport Designer CHM or Word doc that we can modify would be VERy helpful!!!

Cesar,

Thank you for your suggestion - we'll implement it very soon  ;-)

Charles and Keith,

Our End-User Documentation is still in progress, and I also hope to see it soon. I'm not sure about Word format, but it's likely to be in CHM, PDF or HTML (which should be easier to edit to meet your requirements).

You can track the state of this suggestion at www.devexpress.com/issue=A1248.

I downloaded the XPO chm-file,unzipped it on my desktop,  and it doesn't work (Windows Vista, SP1). When clicking on a topic in the tree view, the rightmost panel says "Invalid adress", and asks me to check my spelling! What gives?!

Joakim,

I tried to reproduce this problem on a similar machine, and it works fine for me. Could you please confirm that you're experiencing this problem with all other chm files from this KB article?

@Alan,

Hello Alan,

I can see now a unified .zip file with all .chm help files for .NET subscription.

Thank you!

@Joakim,

Move the file to other folder (ie: c:\temp) and... using the contextual menu... check in the properties window that the Security protection is not activated (In Advanced button).

I tested on another machine in different directories (desktop, my documents, C:, Programs. No chm file seems to work (I tested XPO and XtraGrid). The error page is: Most likely causes: There might be a typing error in the address.

If you clicked on a link, it may be out of date.

So, something is definately not right with these files.... Either it is Vista or it has to do with regional settings?

OK, I found the cause of the problem: Windows Vista security (what else is new... :( )

The solution was to right click on the file and on the first tab page click "Unblock".

Maybe you could point this out on the helpfile download page or as a readme file in the zip-file for all of us stupid enough ever having "upgraded" to Windows Vista.

Cesar,

You're too fast  ;-)

Now you can download both unified archives - with CHM and PDF files. Note however, that the unified archive with the PDF documentation is quite big - >500 Mb to download...

Joakim,

I'm glad to hear that you've found a solution to this problem! We've added this remark to www.devexpress.com/kbAK15987, so that others know how to unblock their CHM files. Thank you!
