Thinking Out Loud

Pricing Changes to the DevExpress WinForms Subscription

A moment ago, I posted a message regarding changes to our ASP.NET Subscription. If you're using our WinForms product line, you can expect a similar change once we release v17.1.

Before I summarize changes to pricing, I want to state that these changes will not affect active WinForms subscribers. If you own an active WinForms Subscription, you will have the right to renew it upon expiration at $399.99.

With that said, we do expect to increase pricing for our WinForms Subscription once we launch v17.1. Pricing for new licenses will be as follows:

1st Year Subscription Cost: $999.99
Renewal Subscription Cost: $449.99

Again, if you own an active WinForms Subscription, this price increase will not impact you. As a courtesy, should your organization require additional WinForms licenses between now and May 31, 2017, you can purchase licenses at our old price point of $899.99.

Upgrade Your Subscription to DevExpress Universal

Just like our ASP.NET Subscribers, we're doing our best to make it easy for you and your team to upgrade your existing WinForms Subscription to DevExpress Universal...

If you’ve considered upgrading your WinForms Subscription to DevExpress Universal in the past, but have hesitated due to pricing concerns, I have some good news for you. Based on your organization’s purchase and licensing history, I've instructed our Client Services Team to offer preferential pricing to those wishing to acquire our Universal Subscription by May 31, 2017. If this option is of interest, please do contact us so we can put together the best possible offer for your company.

We are here and ready to help - please contact us with any questions. DevExpress Client Services can be reached via email at clientservices@devexpress.com or by phone at +1 (818) 844 3383.

I have contacted client services about the universal upgrade, as we are keen to make use of the dashboard.  However paying an extra $1300 for universal just to get the dashboard  seems ridiculous (we have no use for the other parts of universal, just winforms and universal).  Can dashboard not be split off as its own standalone product, like you have done for Reporting?

HI Laurence

Feel free to forward me the email you sent. As far as Dashboard is concerned, it's a bit more complicated than Report Server. As you know, Report Server is not built around a royalty-free licensing model, where as our standard Dashboard and our standard reporting products are...

I also would like to see the WinForms Dashboard Designer and Viewer as part of the WinForms subscription. I would love  to have this control but as a single developer I cannot afford the Universal product just to get the Dashboard. Having all of the components that comes with Universal is a complete waste for me as I would never use them.

Hi,

can i ask, why is that? i see ASP there is new features (those wrapers and Devextreem), but winforms nothing. Is that, Winforms users getting less and its getting expensive to maintain Winforms or other reasons?

@Albert: If you own a license, you aren't paying a penny more, so not sure what you mean by "WinForms users getting less."

Frankly, it's the one thing I never thought I'd read - that our WinForms users are getting "less." Knowing what we ship in that library, it's about as feature-packed as any product line can be.

I think what Alberts means is, are the number of Winforms subscribers getting less, therefore you need to increase the price to make the same revenue.

Client Services have made me a better offer to upgrade to Universal, however I will still have to factor in the 3x increased annual maintenance costs.  For me it will come down to dashboard vs creating a manual dashboard using chart and layout controls, as i did on a previous project.

I think what Alberts meant was that the 17.1 release for WinForms doesn't look like many new/improved features are being added unlike some of the other products ranges - so therefore seems a strange year to be increasing prices - as all I have seen so far for WinForms 17.1are improvements to DataGrid and TreeList and a few other tweaks - nothing new at all

Ou no no..probably i wrote wrong. Will look up for right word...I ment, Winforms Users (developers, clients of your product) decreases. Sorry for my english!!! My bad!!

@Darren and @Laurence

Fair enough...Needless to say, this should have been done 2 years ago but I towed the line and chose not to. My mistake. Here's the bottom line .... I hope your investment in our WinForms (or any other subscription for that matter) Subscription has yielded a ten-fold, hundred-fold, thousand-fold return on the dollar. If it hasn't then an incremental increase of $100 which will not affect existing users is of no import.

Just was wondering, my license expires this coming July, If I wait till then do I get bumped up to the new price or will it remain $399. Or do I have to renew before May 31st to keep this price.

Thanks

Pat

@Patrick - if you renew on time, you will pay what you've always paid - not a penny more. You do not need to renew in May. We *did not* raise pricing for active subscribers...keep your subscription active, and the renewal price will always be $399.99.
