Standard images - what do you need?

XAF Team Blog
05 September 2006

Our final release of XAF will contain a collection of images that can be used and deployed with your applications. We are currently in the process of planning this in detail, and we’d like to get some feedback on the kinds of images you’d like to see in this collection. This depends largely on the types of applications you are going to create, so please let us know what you have in mind.

Images are needed for two different purposes in an XAF-based application. First, we have an image to symbolize each top level class (like in the navbar in the Windows Forms app). These would be things like “Order”, “Sale” or “Invoice”, entries that you would like to see in the top level navigation.

Second are the actions, which appear as entries in (context) menus and/or as buttons or other controls on toolbars. Examples for this might be “Compare to order” (available when viewing delivery data) or “Calculate summaries”, that kind of thing.

Hello Oliver,
I don't think it's worth to mention, that office standard set is needed.
In addition I would like to see:
- export images (supported formats)
- scheduling images
- analysis images (some graphs, symbols for sum, avg, ...)
- biz images like articles, orders, ...
- images for user- and rights management (users, roles, privileges)
- search/find/filter/sorting images
- maybe all these images with additional link-symbol (similar to linking task to contact in XAF)

Of course I could prolonge this list but at the end you would say: ok, we pack whole Glyfz/Glyfx sets into XAF...;-)

Hi Oliver; It's nice that you guys are consulting with developers about these details and I'm sure you'll get plenty of responses.

My question is, where will you be getting these images from? Is DX going to be creating these images or are you just buying them from someone or is there a company going to make these images for DX exclusively?
Why do I ask this question? As XAF will be used in many different apps in the future, developers will need images that are related in those industries. So let's say I use a few of yours with certain look & feel and then I'm developing app for healthcare and I have to get my own images that may not have any similarities with yours and the app will look odd.

My suggestion is that, that developers can also have connection with your source for further custom images which developers will need. This will make life much easier.
Hope that helps!

I would like to know the same as Ben. Previously you seemed to have a cooperation with Glyfz (http://www.glyfz.com). I bought all their icons in the meantime. I won't complain if in the future all such icons will be available for free, but a) I would like to have access to the source too if I need some additional icons and b) XAF is for free available if I'm not mistaken, are you really going to offer a serious collection of icons for free then too (indirectly)? I would be just suprised, I'm not complaining.

Regarding desired icons: The Glfyz is a pretty complete standard collection. Domain specific icons will be naturally needed once you add more modules.

One more point: If you really go into this direction it would be necessary to support different sizes.

Regards,

Stefan

Thanks for your feedback, everybody. The questions you are asking, Ben and Stefan, are very relevant, and we'll try to come up with a good solution. We're trying to walk a thin line here: on the one hand, we want to make it very easy for people to create domain-specific applications that also look good, but of course we will never be able to include every icon or image that somebody might need.

Stefan: XAF is, most probably <g>, not going to be freely available once we get to version 1. A decision for a particular sales model has not been made yet - I just want to make sure nobody gets a wrong impression.

Hi Oliver,

I'm hoping that XAF will be free in your Enterprise package ;-)

Geoff - if you are in that particular lucky position where "free" and "part of the enterprise package" mean the same thing, then I understand your point :-) I also have the strong suspicion that you will end up being satisfied by our final decision, but no promises (yet) ...

The vast majority of my applications are for the Logistics/Motoring industry, and very few icon sets seem to be aimed at this indistry sector.  Most icon sets seem to be for Windows functionality or Accountancy.  I've recently purchased a set from http://www.aha-soft.com/ which help things along a little, but it would be nice if someone were to produce a series of specific industry targeted icon sets.

Just my 2p.

I would like to suggest being able to add our own custom icons/bitmaps too.
