Sneak Peek: New ASP.NET Rating Control

One of the reasons I’m excited about the upcoming 2009 Volume 2 release of DXperience is the new ASP.NET Rating control which allows your website visitors to rate content on your site, just like rating a movie on Netflix.com or Blockbuster.com:

The ASPxRatingControl supports 3 precision display types:
  • Half
  • Full
  • Exact

You’ll also love the fact the ASP.NET Rating control also comes packaged with all the gorgeous DevExpress themes. For example, here’s the Red Wine theme:

The ASPxRatingControl is not yet released but it will be part the DXperience ASP.NET Subscription. You’ll get to play with the new rating control when the DXperience 2009 volume 2 release is dropped in your client center account. (July 2009-ish timeframe).

Don’t those stars just make you want to add this feature to your websites right now?

One question, how will be saved the rate? in a table using datasource, or it will be necessary to manage manually using the events provided?

Presume Null / Empty will be a load of empty stars, or possibly an optinal message "Not rated yet" or something like that.

Not sure how we would use it yet, but nice.

Long time ago i use to work with quality ensurance of software. I use to self asses the teams and ask them to rate themselves. A senior quality dude said to me that the 1-6 rating was better, because many people were tempted to rate 3 if they could get away with it. Therefore 1-6 was better becuase then they would have to choose 3 or 4 which is a good indicator. What i am trying to say? Change it to 6 starts or make it configurable. If you are going to use it 6 stars, thats the best.

Antonio,

Saving the individual 'Rating' will most likely be through callbacks to the server. To get that 'Ajax' effect. :)

Dave,

It's a new control which I'm sure will evolve with time. Please keep that great feedback coming and be sure to add suggestions to the support center.

Christian,

You bring up a good point about the psychology of rating. I remember reading an article about some company that said customers voted a lot more often when they used 'full' precision instead of half for the stars. Seems the 'half' star decisioning would turn off many users.

As for the 6 star suggestion, please submit it to the support center once the control is released and thank you for the feedback.
