DevExpress Roadmap for 2018

Back at the end of 2017, we held a series of four webinars over four days to describe the features and enhancements we were considering for our products in 2018. As a part of that, we sent out a survey to selected users so that they could review those plans and vote on them. This way, we can ascertain what aspects of our roadmap for 2018 our customers are most interested in and thereby direct and focus our development efforts to fulfill those needs.

RateItOur official 2018 roadmap is now live on DevExpress.com for all active customers. You will need to login to our site, and then you can use the links below to review our plans for this year's two major release cycles and tell us what you think of the features we have planned for each platform.

Before I list the platforms and the links though, I must stress the following:

This roadmap is for informational purposes only. You should not rely upon it for major purchase or product planning decisions/commitments. Just like all software development projects, products/features in this roadmap are subject to change or delay, with or without notice. The development or release of a specific feature or product listed on this roadmap is at the sole discretion of Developer Express Inc.

I would strongly encourage you to vote on the features we describe in the roadmap for the platforms you are interested in. If you don’t, we won’t know what you want us to focus on! (And the teams will go off and do something else – a ToDo List control anyone?)

Of course, if you have feedback about the roadmap and would rather contact me directly, I would be delighted to hear from you. My email address is below.

As always I'm impressed with what you've got in the pipeline. I'm very happy with the plans you have for all of the different products. One thing that has me aconcerned though is that you have no Roadmap for UWP listed. Did I miss some grave announcement about UWP or is something else going on?

All controls need to be able to render EMOJI. It's a part of the language these days. People use emoji in everything. I used XtraReports in a design recently to find that emoji doesn't render.

Impressive and exciting list of upcoming changes to look forward to. Where can I look at the roadmap after completing the survey?

Sven Heitmann (Theasoft)

completed the survey by accidently clicking on complete now I can't see the roadmap anymore :(

can you change this behavior or show the roadmap somewhere else please?

I'm really excited about the features you have planned. :)

Like Sven I would also like to be able to see the roadmap after completing the survey.

i know it's hard to plan release dates in the software business. But is there an approx release date of 18.1?

March 9, 2018 2:36 AM

Steve Rouse

I would also like to see a "read only" version once I have completed it so that I can keep it and refresh my memory of potentially what my be on the horizon during the next 6 - 18 months.

VCL (5 pages)  vs WinForms (14 pages)

No Acrylic Material, No DirectX for VCL :(

Brendon Muck [DevExpress MVP]

It appears that the description of the WinForms Rich Text Editor Shapes proposal is the exact same description as the Rich Text Editor Change Tracking proposal.

@Stephen: Problem is, we just don't get a lot of feedback from our customers requesting more UWP. Either there's a very small proportion of customers using it, or pretty much no one needs it and would rather write WinForms/WPF apps for thick client.

@Neal: Yes, we know -- you've already written to us about it 😄

@J Joubert, @Sven, @Tomas, @Steve: I'll have to see if we can't allow the roadmap to be viewed for logged-in customers who've already completed the survey.

@ima_aa: As we have done for the past however many years, the .1 release is targeted for the end of the first half of the year, and the .2 release for the end of the second half. Last year, we made a big effort to make that May and November, so I expect it'll be the same this year.

@Charalampos: I'd have to say it's a reflection of the size of our customer base for the two products. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Brendon: Damn copy/paste. I'll go smack whoever wrote it.

@Julian: I hope this will change in a couple years since you finally made a start for Firemonkey controls! *awesome* :)

I like the VCL roadmap.

I would personal set other priorities, but there is a roadmap and there are new features.

I'm happy :-)

Vladimir Abadzhev (DevExpress)

@J Joubert, @Sven, @Tomas, @Steve, and everybody: All Roadmap webpages now have a link that allows you to review the features again after completing the survey.

@Brendon: Thanks for reporting, I've updated the Shapes feature description.

Great that DevExpress made a start with FireMonkey controls.

Would be nice to have the RichEditControl + Ribbon as well :-)

March 10, 2018 9:40 AM

Jens Fudickar [DX-Squad]

@Vladimir: It would be nice if it would be possible to jump back to the list of all roadmap pages.

When I'm in a page like VCL there is no link to go to WinForms or the overview.

This is an awesome VCL road map. Finally a Right-to-Left support and FlowChart UI Refresh...I can't wait!!

And on top of that FireMonkey controls and ORM framework.

well done DevExpress :)

no Xamarin.Forms components ?

March 11, 2018 11:26 AM

Julian Bucknall (DevExpress)

@Stefano: It's a reflection of the feedback we get from customers. Not many have been asking for more Xamarin controls. That may be because we don't have enough of them for people to use, or it may be that our customers don't write that kind of app.

@Ahmed: I'm going to have to say that our target is to get the FireMonkey controls we mentioned out in 2018. Proper support RTL may have to wait.

March 11, 2018 2:51 PM

Manuel Grundner [DevExpress MVP]

@Julian with xamarin and UWP its a Chicken Egg Problem, to write LOB apps for These platforms we need more controls, so no controls, No Feedback, No Apps.

I think the way devextreme startet Out, and now they Support a large number of Frameworks. I think thats the right way for UWP and Xamarin to go.

March 12, 2018 4:36 AM

Stefano Paparesta

@Julian, interesting point if view. For me Xamarin and in particular, Xamarin.Forms is very important. In this moment i use Syncfusion control, but I would be happy to use a single suite.

The same for me ...

I'm waiting for Xamarin Full set of components. "Xamarin Forms"

I think Devexpress is afraid about Xamarin.

Not Silverlight a second time.

I would like to second (or fourth?) the comment regarding Xamarin Forms support.  There are some comments in the KB about Xamarin from myself and others.

Understood that DevEx may not be seeing sufficient interest from customers, but as others have stated that may be because DevEx is missing in action on pursuing Xamarin Forms.  The DevEx XamGrid is great .

Maybe if DevEx would take some more definitive action and promotion for Xamarin you would see additional developers and interest.  Currently their is almost no mention of Xamarin on the DevEx site.

Microsoft seems to be very committed to Xamarin including considerable new support in VS2017.  While the DevExtreme may be a great offering, native mobile app support in C# via Xamarin is another avenue many of us would like to follow.

1 to all the comments about a Xamarin forms suite.

For now, I was forced to use Telerik Xamarin Controls because their lib is much more complete than DX Xamarin tools.

Devexpress always amazing, looking for following things.

1) ASPxGridview offline feature in ASP.net Web

2) Gantt control very useful to see the task.

3) Reporting in DevExtreme.
